My pc has suddenly started to do more things at startup for no apparent reason. Going to Start, Programs and Start-up, it only shows Microsoft Office and Adobe Gamma Loader.

What can I do about this as I don`t kow how to stop these on startup?

Also, how do I stop all those programs starting that are at the bottom right of the screen next to the clock? I can turn them off but can I prevent them from starting in the first place?

Well you can go to START>RUN and type msconfig
Next go to the startup folder and uncheck the applications (ONLY) that you do not need to come up. DO NOT uncheck any power profile or Scanreg listigs. Then close and restart. James Collins

I get an error message typing msconfig in the run command:

"Could not fins the file msconfig (or one of it`s componants). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available."

I forgot to mention I`m using Windows 2000 Pro, does this make a difference? thanks.

Try going to the control panel > administrative tools > services... you'll get a long list of things which the computer runs, some at startup, some not, and be careful cos some are pretty important to keep your pc happy....

I can`t find the program that is running on startup in that list.
