I have P4 1.4GHz PC with 256MB RAM running Win XP pro. I have a problem.
That is when I start my PC, the desktop wallpaper appear with desktop icons within 1 minute. But the loading process continue with high disk activity for another 3 more minutes. In that time I an't do anything else as that process use most of the memory. Even if I clck a desktop icon during that 3 minutes, the corresponding program starts to load only after the end of that 3 minutes period. I only have 2 startup programs to load & they are NAV 2004 & Sygate Personal Firewall. In my msconfig the loading items are SysTray, NvCpl, smc (Sygate), ccApp, ADVCHK.
Can someone please tell me the things that I can do to reduse these 4 minutes startup process? (I tried BootVis & it says the actual boot did after 72 seconds.)

You can try checking startup items laoding incase there is something loading you are not aware of, try looking under the following keys.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

also do the usual make sure you have checked for viruses/spyware etc.

check on boot what actuall processes are using up all you memory maybe you have something loading that has compatability issues whith other app's you have loaded

Also, there are items called "Services" that load in addition to startup programs. I don't recommend you disable them from msconfig. It is best to take a look at them from Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services. Only disable ones that you know you don't need (see for some tips). You can also search the net on each name you're not sure about.

Then hopefully things will be better after rebooting.

DO NOT use the XP Upgrade unattended because if you do XP will use the FAT 16 (NTFS) and you cannot access neither HD if you have two. We have been working on mine for about 2 weeks now. And have tried all kinds of Programs, still get unmountable_boot_volume. And going into Setup /recovery system shuts down. And, cannot by pass it. And there isnt any way to use Floppy Recovery.

It changed both HD's 80gig & 40 gig, the Data is still there but cannot access it.

How does it boot into Safe Mode? It would be interesting to see how it went if you didn't load NAV 2004.

Are you able to get Task Manager running to see exactly what is using all the CPU?

Sorry for delay of repling as I had an internet connection problem.
I have done all the things you guys have told. & did what was is Still the problem is there. When I tried Safe mode, it boot & let me do the other things in less than a minute. But the problem comes in when I boot on normal mode. Can anyone of you have an other idea?
