I have a Windows 2K Pro machine that goes through startup and right after it passes the "Press F8" for startup options it goes to a black screen. The monitor shows an amber light and the PC is still booting or at least still running. The thing is its sporatic. If I restart it it starts fine.

sounds like you could have the resolution or a display setting that is out of the range of your monitor..

if you hit F8 when you boot you should be able to choose different options to boot with (including safe mode)

I would also try "Enable VGA Mode" (resets video settings to basic)

if you maybe installed a driver before this happend you may also want to try "last known good config"

or you could try safe mode as the freakmaster said ;]

Hope that helps!

thanks guys I will try those suggestions.
