I've been trying to start the numbering of a document from page 4, with no numbers at all on the first 3 pages. I've read thread68-1019035 but can't ghet it to leave the first three pages un-numbered. I either get pages 1 - 3 numbered as that, then the numbering starting again on page 4 as 1, or no numbers at all on any pages. I've tried bot a next page section break and a continuous section break at the bottom of page 3, and neither seem to make any difference to the result I get. Any help gratefully received.

Hi domino3,
Have you tried using the Header Footer toolbar icon that disconnects one footer from the previous?

Assuming you're using Word, try this:

1. View > Header and Footer
2. Switch to Footer
3. Format Page Number
4. Page Numbering > Start at: 4 > OK

Report success back to TT [2thumbsup]

I did try formatting the page numbering to start at 4, but that resulted in page 1 being numbered as 4, page 2 as 5 and so on. I've also tried setting the page numbering through view - header footer and insert - page break and neither give the result I expect.

1. Page 4 must be the start of a new Section.

2. The new Section must be set as SameAs Previous = False. The default is SameAs Previous = True.

3. Remove all page numbering fields (if they exist) for the previous Section.

Technically, you do not need to start page numbering at 4. It already IS page 4. Of course if you want to "hard-code" that, set the page numbering to start at 4. Then you can add pages to the previous Section, and the new section will still start at 4. But unless you add pages to the previous Section, it will be...page 4.

There will be page numbering showing in pages 1 to 3 (in the previous Section) only if you put numbering field there. No fields....no numbering.

The problem I'm having is that I can't clear the page numbering on the first section. I take it out by going in to view - header footer on page 1 and then deleting the number ftom the footer, then it reappears when I put the numbering in the second section. Although the numbering is technically correct, I don't want numbers appearing on what are the front cover of the document and the two contents pages.

Disconnect the page-numbered footer from the previous section's footer. On the Header/Footer toolbar, there's a button for this.

My emphasis.

1. Look at the link Tony posted.

2. Read my post. I deliberately made the "must" bold. Must means....must. If the numbering are still appearing....then the later Section is SameAs Previous. So when you ADD numbering to it...and it is SameAs Previous....then the previous will look the same, now won't it? To repeat, the new Section (with page 4) MUST be set as not SameAs Previous.

Then anything you add to it - like page numering - will not be carried back to the previous Section.

Follow the steps I posted.
