Does anyone know where to download and how to install the operating system for the StarTalk Mini (2.6 s/w)? The harddrive had gone out in it, luckily i have an old mac hyperdrive 20 that has the proper scsi drive, but i am not sure about the formatting. if anyone has any suggestions on where to get the software and possible prices, please let me know. thank you in advance.

As far as I know, there are no legitimate sites that offer such a download, and using one of the few disk images floating on the web would raise the concern of a license violation. The drives, as a repair part, were sold with software already installed, and there was no provision for end users to obtain the software to load onto their own drives.

There are still a few new-old-stock drives in the refurb market, but they are generally priced in the 200 to 300 dollar range. Of course, there are used salvage pulls as well, but you end up with a used drive with just that much less useful life.

It would very likely be more cost effective to buy a Startalk Flash with a software level that is compatible with your KSU, assuming you do not wish to update your KSU. It has the same form factor as the mini, except that it takes a smaller power supply (same supply as an ATA).

It is physically possible, with the right legacy computer, to do a bit-by-bit clone of a working mini drive to a spare drive, but that, too, raises license issues if you use the drive for one mini to create a drive for another.

If you can locate an original Startalk with the floppy drive or attachment type (software loader), and can locate the software floppy disk set, it contains all you need to format and install a working system on the hard drive. The service documents for the Startalk A/B/C covers install and diagnostics.

The problem with the FLASH is no audio headroom, and if the audio is slightly hot the playback is distorted or breaks up! Very poor and cheap design.

If I was you I would even bother trying to restore it, you can by a Star-Talk Flash dirt cheap just Google it
