Greetings friends, know what is up?

I'm running windows '98 first edition - 1.2 Duron, 256 RAM, shared 32 video, small HD 3.2 NOT MUCH USED

my HD stoped shutting down about 1½ weeks ago, so I figured it must be becouse,of a program loading in my start-up, so I brought up the system configuration utility.

I had a windows exe file in there, that runs in the background, which seems to be of no significance and it was not there before when a hard drive was shutting down just fine, so I deselected it, "StimageMonitor" contained in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\STIMON.EXE, then rebooted my computer. The computer was loading like normal, but when it came up I happened to run my mouse pointer over my VirusScan software and console, which is located on the taskbar beside the clock, it just vanished and I was not able to use either the VirusScan or the console, so I tried to go into the back door of the VirusScan software by going start menu/programs/network associates/VirusScan... It loaded up scanned about 200 files and then vanished, not minimize it was almost like I closed it.

So I brought up the system configuration utility once again, and I selected "StiMagemonitor" again, and then rebooted, it hung, so I Ctrl-Alt Deleted it twice, it would not boot at all, so I pressed reset, it still would not boot and it also said something like "stacks have changed -- need to be reset press F10, but I'm no computer guru, so I reset it again, this time the message changed and said and has said since Monday "bootstrap is set to disable -- press F10. Anyway I let it load, it did normal, however my VirusScan software would still not work, and my hard drive will not shut down, I tried the bootstrap by pressing F10 on boot up. It gives me five options No. 1 is disable, No. 2 is 18h, No. 3 is 19h... And two others that do not seem to work well, No. 4 boots the computer just fine, but the VirusScan software still will not work, and the bootstrap message still appears.

Currently it is set to No. 1, disable
my start up programs include
"ScanRegistry"
"system tray"
"loadpowerPC"
"EM_EXEC" this is for my mouse
"Microsoft Intellitype Pro" this is for my keyboard.
"mdac_runonce"
"wcmdmgr"
"TklBellE_xe"
"StimageMonitor"
"LoadPowerProfile"

PowerRegSchedualeV2 as well as cca.exe, which are both part of my startup folder, I tried to delete cca.exe because it was never there before Monday I also tried to deselect it from starting, it appeared again, I do not necessarily think that it is doing anything, because when I tried to double-click it nothing happened.

Does anybody have any ideas of what is going on and how I can get it back to normal?

Thanks in advance friends

By the way the only a program that I have downloaded recently before this happened was x3watch just a accountability program, very small but it does not start up, it did but I deselected it because I thought that it might be the problem, but apparently not.

I would be inclined to delete your virus checker and reload it or load a different one. You will find a free on at ww.grisoft.com There is no doubt that they can be a darn nuisance and sometimes more trouble than they are worth.

You have a scanner?
Think stimon.exe is related to it...configured to startup at boot up...

When you say your HD stopped shutting down, you mean powering down...thru the Power Management Settings?
How long since you updated virus definitions?

ticklebelly.exe (or whatever)
and powerregscheduler and
wcmdmgr must be 3rd party apps?

Have you looked in Power Management options to see if there's a setting changed?

Stimon is for your scanner or for digital cameras. It is constantly looking at the scanner to see if a button was pushed. Im not really sure how it works with a digital camera. So that one is o.k. You can get it out of the start-up and place a link to it in your quick launch if you use the buttons. After each use you will have to CTRL-ALT-DEL to remove it. Personally I don't like it running all of the time. It will bypass a screensaver password if a button on the scanner is pressed accidentally. I have a two year old that is intriuged by the computer. So the svreen saver password is a must. TigerFlight [tiger]

The two that stick out as ??????'s would be "mdac_runonce"
"TklBellE_xe".
The first one, notice it say's runonce. It maybe from a failed software install. IS it "stuck" in the registry? Here's how to back up the registry then delete those two.

Push START button then move up to and click RUN. Now type in regedit. Now click OK.

When the window pop's up, move your curor to the + beside the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and click the + sign. Now move down to the + by Software and click. Move down to Microsoft and click. Move down to Windows and click. Move down to Current Version and click. From here you will CLICK the "Current Version" folder. It will open up. Then move the mouse up to the upper left corner. To the Tool bar. Click REGISTRY. From the drop down, choose EXPORT REGISTRY FILE. It will prompt you for a name and place to save the file. Name it whatever (RUN.reg). This will back up the entire key in case you need to restore. Now with that done. Look in the LEFT HAND PANE. All of the folders that are named Run, RunOnce, RunServices need to be opened indavidaully to look for references to the "mdac_runonce", "TklBellE_xe". In the right Hand pane highlight the refence that you want to get rid of. Then goto the Tool barand click Edit the move down to Delete and click. It will ask if you are sure. Click OK. After you have looked through all of those, goto HKEY_CURRENT_USER and go throught the same process to the run, etc.... BE SURE TO BACK UP FIRST. When you are finished. REBOOT. They should be gone. If you need to restore the registry changes that you made. Just goto the .reg files that you created and double-click them. It will ask you to confirm. Click yes. It will tell you it was successful. Then reboot.

Sorry for sounding patronizing. But trying to be sure that I cover each step without confusing anyone. I know what I mean but you may not!!!

There are other places to look. But I am pretty sure that this will cover the problem. Let me know. TigerFlight [tiger]

"TklBellE_xe is a background process launched at startup by real player, it just runs along all the time checking for updates, and telling realplayer every movie you watch etc.( how nice of them! )Anyway, you don't need, or want it running all the time, it's just wasting your resources.I just use Startup Cop a free download from
to stop it from ever starting up. This is a great little program for disabling startup items say if you're not sure what effect it will have because everything can be disabled or re-enabled if there is a problem and various startup configurations can be saved.
As for the virus scanner problem,I had one that was similar, ended up un-installing it and then re-installing it that worked, not sure what caused it though.

The info I got on that one last night after I got off of here was that it was TklBellExe not TklBellE_xe. So I am confused. Maybe misstyped? Any how here is a link that another person posted to give you an idea of what startup files are and do. Posted by Kento .
