Greetings friends, know what is up?
I'm running windows '98 first edition - 1.2 Duron, 256 RAM, shared 32 video, small HD 3.2 NOT MUCH USED
my HD stoped shutting down about 1½ weeks ago, so I figured it must be becouse,of a program loading in my start-up, so I brought up the system configuration utility.
I had a windows exe file in there, that runs in the background, which seems to be of no significance and it was not there before when a hard drive was shutting down just fine, so I deselected it, "StimageMonitor" contained in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\STIMON.EXE, then rebooted my computer. The computer was loading like normal, but when it came up I happened to run my mouse pointer over my VirusScan software and console, which is located on the taskbar beside the clock, it just vanished and I was not able to use either the VirusScan or the console, so I tried to go into the back door of the VirusScan software by going start menu/programs/network associates/VirusScan... It loaded up scanned about 200 files and then vanished, not minimize it was almost like I closed it.
So I brought up the system configuration utility once again, and I selected "StiMagemonitor" again, and then rebooted, it hung, so I Ctrl-Alt Deleted it twice, it would not boot at all, so I pressed reset, it still would not boot and it also said something like "stacks have changed -- need to be reset press F10, but I'm no computer guru, so I reset it again, this time the message changed and said and has said since Monday "bootstrap is set to disable -- press F10. Anyway I let it load, it did normal, however my VirusScan software would still not work, and my hard drive will not shut down, I tried the bootstrap by pressing F10 on boot up. It gives me five options No. 1 is disable, No. 2 is 18h, No. 3 is 19h... And two others that do not seem to work well, No. 4 boots the computer just fine, but the VirusScan software still will not work, and the bootstrap message still appears.
Currently it is set to No. 1, disable
my start up programs include
"ScanRegistry"
"system tray"
"loadpowerPC"
"EM_EXEC" this is for my mouse
"Microsoft Intellitype Pro" this is for my keyboard.
"mdac_runonce"
"wcmdmgr"
"TklBellE_xe"
"StimageMonitor"
"LoadPowerProfile"
PowerRegSchedualeV2 as well as cca.exe, which are both part of my startup folder, I tried to delete cca.exe because it was never there before Monday I also tried to deselect it from starting, it appeared again, I do not necessarily think that it is doing anything, because when I tried to double-click it nothing happened.
Does anybody have any ideas of what is going on and how I can get it back to normal?
Thanks in advance friends
By the way the only a program that I have downloaded recently before this happened was x3watch just a accountability program, very small but it does not start up, it did but I deselected it because I thought that it might be the problem, but apparently not.
