Is there any way to add a "Restart" button to the Start Menu?

When I click Start, I have the "Shut Down" option and then I have to choose "Restart". Is there a way to add a "Restart" button that would automatically reboot the machine without having to choose that option from a drop down box? I'd like to add this button in addition to the Shut Down button if possible.

Also, if this is possible, what would be the easiest way to push this change to multiple user machines?

You can obtain the resource kit, and create a shortcut using the shutdown tool. The target for the shortcut would read:

shutdown -r -f

Or, use this great utility that sits in the notification tray, freeware:

While those are great utilities, it's not really what I'm looking for. I'm curious if there is a way to add a button to the Start Menu like "Shut Down". I've seen a way to add "Log Off" via the registry, but haven't been able to locate a way to add a "Restart" button.

You create the shortcut, then drag it on top of the Start button.

rmiley - what's wrong with just having an icon on the desktop or in quick launch to do this (as well as bcastner's suggestions - will give you this too). Its even quicker than Start/Restart.

There are also free utilities which will sit in the tray and let you shutdown, log off, restart etc from there.

It's not "wrong" it's just different than what I wanted for my users. I've done what bcastner suggested and gave him a star for pointing me in that direction.

I really wanted a button right below or above "Shut Down" on the Start Menu, but it looks like that isn't possible. Creating the shortcut and placing in the All Users\Start Menu (or dragging to the Start Menu) puts the shortcut towards the top, whereas I want the button to be at the bottom.

I do appreciate all the suggestions though. It just isn't what i was looking for.

The reg key I was talking about was HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and creatig a DWORD value of "ForceStartMenuLogoff" set to 1. This is the sort of button I am trying to get, but I guess it isn't possible.

Hope that kind of explains what I was going for.

There is not an equivalent registry entry to introduce the reboot icon/shortcut.

I looked again, but there is nothing there. Nor in Group Policy, that is exactly that simple.

Best.
