This may be an easy fix, but I cannot find a solution in the Windows Help info.

My son's desktop does not display the Start Menu anywhere on the screen - however - Alt/Esc will bring it up.

Where can I find the option to display it on the bottom?

As long as CTRL+ESC can bring up the taskbar, the following will fix the issue for you.

Download and double click to execute:

Download and double click to execute:

Restore Taskbar and Start Menu
Line 117

Or download and use this GUI utility:
Taskbar Repair Plus

A couple of other things to look at.

Have you used the options in the Taskbar Properties dialog box to hide the Taskbar, or have you unlocked the Taskbar and dragged the top of the Taskbar to the bottom of your screen to shrink the Taskbar?

Autohide taskbar only works once

Are your Video drivers updated to the latest version?

System Restore can also be used to revert to a time when things worked.

Do you have the Taskbar loading from Safe Mode, or when logged on in Normal Mode as a different user?
