My turn to ask a question in this forum. I mainly implement NBU for Unix so I appolize in advance for my ignorance of Microshaft, um I am Mircosoft.

I am looking to see if anyone can post what a standard exclude list for Windows 2000 clients might contain. I know that the pagefile.sys should be excluded along with .tmp files. I would think you would also exclude the winnt\system32\config directory since this gets backed up with the system state. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Anyway, any assistance with a standardized exclude list would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!!

Hi,

The pagefile(s) is(are) excluded anyway. You'll need to specify things like *.tmp etc as you say. Also, we use TNG here and generally exclude everything below C:\TNG\ as all those files are usually in a locked state anyway. Having just browsed two Win2k serversSystem_State backups I can't see the files that reside in C:\Winnt\Config on the list. I'd not exclude that directory at all - there are only 3 files there of around 600Kb each anyway.

San Media servers create their own excludes for .lock files under the Netbackup directory as well. So I don't modify those.

Cheers - Tim

We exclude all the following:

*.avi
*.lck
*.lock
*.mov
*.mp3
*.tmp
*.pqi

Of course, some are specific to our directory structure and things like MSSQL are excluded as we use hot backups. If you have any questions, please drop me a note.

I found this at Veritas:
"
Symptom:
How to exclude files with certain extensions using the * wildcard character

Solution:

Beginning VERITAS NetBackup (tm) 4.5, it appeared that the following exclude syntax in the exclude tab list failed to exclude the files with those extensions and similar file extensions from the backups in all the local drives.

*.vsp
*.pdf
*.pst

The workaround is to use the following syntax, this will allow those extensions to be excluded for all drives:

\*\*.vsp
\*\*.pdf
\*\*.pst

To exclude all the files with that extension on a specific drive, the following can be used (D drive for example):

D:\*\*.vsp
D:\*\*.pdf

"

Does anyone know if this is just for file types .vsp, .pdf, and .pst or does this apply generally for all types. Right now, I am using \*\*.mdf I am assuming that this means to exclude all .mdf files from all of the drives that it's supposed to be backing up.

Should I be using *.mdf instead?

? In our environment - The files are defintiely excluded from backups as I have them listed.

Thanks guys, I will see how it works out. I will update this post when I able to check it.
