Here's a bit more info....Scavenging looks at a specific date/time stamp on the host records. To prevent a host record from being deleted, the machine must dynamically update the date/time stamp and this typically occurs during renewal and/or startup. Now, if the host record in DNS was not created dynamically by the target (i.e. you manually created the record) the date time field will be blank within the host record itself. DNS, by design, will not scavenge records with blank date/time fields in the record. In our environment we have workstations setup dynamically but printers and servers are all statically setup. Note that you may want to check how the printers are setup in your environment and see if you find a date/time in the scavenging field of the host record. One caution is that with Microsoft DNS the date/time field can be manually turned on and off and the date/time stamp added to or removed from the record by checking or unchecking a check box on the host record. We have been bit a few times by people checking the box on a statically created host record where the machine cannot dynamically update the date/time stamp. Scavenging will take place in this instance and you'll wonder where the record went. Hope this helps.
