I have configured a VPN using two Linksys BEFSX41 routers to link a remote site with a head office. H/O is running terminal services on a Win2000 server and has an NT4 domain controller. The remote site, using a WinXP Pro PC, can connect using Remote Desktop. So far, so good. However, the Remote Desktop connection is unreliable, falling over with the following error:

Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconnected, Please try connecting to the remote computer again.

I have trimmed the Remote Desktop performance settings to their minimum and reduced the encryption level on Terminal Services sessions at the server end, which has helped, but sessions still get this error anywhere from a few seconds to 15 minutes of logging in. I have also made sure KeepAlive is on.

I am now about out of ideas. Can anyone suggest anything else which might help the connection stay live, or how I can pinpoint the cause of this error?

(My only other wild thought is to increase our DSL bandwidth, but as Remote Desktop is supposed to run OK even over a 28k modem link, I need to be more sure this is my cure.)
