SSL being VERY slow

I've been toying around with SSL and HTTPS the past few days (now that I have a semi-need for it) and on both servers it seems REALLY slow when I access it from outside my network. I moved it to another server (new cert) and tried, still very slow. When I access it from the inside my network it comes right up (complaining that the certs not from a trusted source blah blah) but none the less it pops up with no problem...
any ideas?
