SRST on 7970

I have one on my desk (I'm the only person in the company with one) and I have problems with it fairly regularly. The screen doesn't update properly. I'll have receive a call and when I hang up sometimes the display will still show the call as being active. It reboots with no notice occassionally as well. I have no plans to deploy them to any other users at this point in time.

Have you figured out how to send video to the phone? Like from a camera or a DVD?

I believe this will require the MPEG4 video capabilities which are not actually available until the next firmware release. In my opinion Cisco released the 7970 to market about twelve months before it was really ready to be be used. They have said it can do a lot of things that it's really not capable of doing yet. Hopefully they can get the phone to a point where it is usable. I hear that the firmware for the 7970 on CCM 4.0 is much better than the stuff for CCM 3.3 (which is what I use) but I'm not ready to upgrade yet. I finally got so sick of my 7970 locking up and not working properly that I took it off my desk yesterday and went back to a 7960. The color phone is sitting in a box waiting for Cisco to get it right. I think the most telling problem with it was when February 29th rolled around this year and the phones didn't acknowledge it's existance and tried saying it was March 1st.

That is too bad. I bought 2 to give to the executives and I wanted to show them the capabilities of the unit. I figured if I could hook the security cameras, stream a movie or training video to the units that they would like the coolness factor of the unit. I am running 4.01 on my system and I haven't heard of any problems, but I do not personally have one on mydesk. I agree that the Leap year issue (I think that was the issue) was a big SNAFU on Cisco part. The fact that they did not include a small camera on the device for fully integrated video conferencing is disappointing as well. If you find a way to stream the video to the unit once the MPEG4 decoding is added, let me know. I would LOVE to be able to do that.

Cisco had a 7970 with a camera built in ready to go to market but dropped the entire project after some field trials because customers didn't like it. They found that a fixed camera built into the phone ended up having you looking up the nose of the person you were talking to most of the time, which people did not like! That's when they decided to go with a hardware/software combination using modified Logitech QuickCams in the form of their VT Advantage product.

I just got had to open a case with cisco about a 7970 only being able to answer a phone using the headset, so I asked him about video decoding. This was his response.
Cisco TAC guy:
The 7970 does not have any capabilities of video streaming or any decoding
of video, maybe you were mistaken by another product of ours?
My response:
I was under the impression fromm your sales site that this is the defacto
product for video conferencing. You would have a camera hooked into your
computer and it would be displayed on the 7970 you where calling.
Cisco tac guy:
The product that you are thinking of is VT Advantage and it is an addon to
the IP Phones. You hook up a camera to the phones and install additional
software to get that working.
Here is a link in which you can learn all about VT advantage:
The video is displayed on the computer screen, the phones have no notion of
decoding video.

Yeah I'm not sure what happened to the video capabilities of the phone. When Cisco first started talking to me about the phone (around 18 months ago) they kept talking about it's MPEG video capabilities and how you can "stream CNN onto your phone". I guess they must have had problems with that portion of the code and it has not yet made it to market. As I said in the earlier post, I was recently told that MPEG4 capabilities would be added to an upcoming firmware release.

Actually I have to disagree with your statement. We have them, and they work fine. Cisco was able to show me how to do a hard reset of the 7970 and my issue was fixed. Just like any new piece of bleading edge hardware it will be a bit buggy (but not too much), until the manaufacturer can get exposure to the multitude of different environements that are out there.
Here is the procedure if anyone is interested.
Procedure:
1) Power off 7970
2) Power on 7970 while holding the # key
3) The lines lamp should blink amber in sequence, let go of the # key
4) Press 123456789*0#
5) The lamps should blink green in sequence
6) The phone will obtain IP information via DHCP
7) The TERM70.default load will be loaded on the phone
8) The phone should recover the configuration file from CallManager, ifnot reset with **#** and your confriguration will be restored
