Has any one ever promoted a stand alone W2K server running SQL 2000 to an active directory domain controller in an existing forest? If so what kind of preparations do I need to implement.I have heard rumors of a schema extension, but have not been able to find anything in the knowledge base or technet.

Not sure I would recommend a SQL server obtaining the additional overhead of a domain controller. In my experience, it is much better to leave the SQL server as a member server.

To answer your question, there is no special preparations to make prior to promoting. A schema can be extended, but the purpose for this is determining what data is included with Active Directory. In most cases, it is best left alone.

Make sure the server is currently a member of the domain/forest you want it to be an AD server, and run dcpromo.

Good Luck
