Hi,

Can anybody give me a Comparision of the 2 most widely used
Databases Oracle 8i and SQL Server.
We have to use one of these as the Database
in a VB 6.0 Project which is right now working with MS-Access
Database. since the Database is growing big we have to shift
to a bigger database.
so please give some suggestions which one to use SQL Server or
Oracle 8i ??????
which is the best among the two ?

Thanx in Advance
Steve

Oracle have a long reputation for providing a reliable, powerful database that can cope with extremely large capacities of data. Their marketing strategy has been to get in with the large corporations, many of whom could now be seen as 'Oracle shops', i.e. will only buy Oracle products.

Microsoft have competed by attacking from the bottom. They formed a partnership with Sybase and ported it to NT to make SQL Server 6.0. SS6.5 was seen as powerful, but not quite reliable or fast enough for very large quantities of data. The engine of SQL Server 7.0 has been rewritten by ex-Informix engineers and is probably now fully capable of coping with extremely large data quantities.

Anyway, that's the balanced argument bit. Practically, these things probably aren't going to effect you. You will find the move from Access to SQL Server much easier than to Oracle, especially if you want to integrate with VB. My home ----> My company ->
