I have been using SQL Server 2008 for about 8 months now, but I am having naming issues. When I first began upgrading our database the name was only the given SQL Server name. Now when I try to name SQL Servers the name is the physical machine/servername then the SQL Server name.

Ex. PhysicalServerName\SQLServerDBName (APP07\SQL1)

Anyway to change this or is this a standard practice that I had no idea about?

Its actually good practice if you are going to be running several instances of SQL on the same box (e.g. a sql farm) to have each a named instance.

Its normal practice and nothing to be concerned with, it allows multiple instances to be installed on the same machine and probably your "upgrade" was actually deemed a new seperate instance rather than replacing the existing SQL version.
