SQL Server access error

I've created an excel query to my SQL database to pull in some tabular data for reporting.

I want to make this available to web users who log in to the website, but while the spreadsheet comes up just fine, when the query tries to execute, I get a "cannot find SQL server" error. If I'm in house, it works perfectly, but not when I'm outside the network. The firewall provider says if they can access the webpage, the query should execute as if they were on our network (???)

Everything else from the site works fine, so does anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks!

Margaret

Margaret,

It might be that the firewall is not permitting traffic through the port that SQL Server 'listens' on. According to this article, that is port 1433. However, not being an expert in such things, I expect that there is more to it than that - but perhaps it will start you in the right direction.

Good luck.

Yeah -- I read that article too and passed that information along to my network guy, but he says once they're on that page, they're past the firewall and it shouldn't matter.

It evidently DOES matter, but thought I would ask you guys if you had any other ideas.

Thanks!
