I have a friend who asked me the following question:

Can you take a SQL 2000 database from a Win2K server, and run it on a web server? Will it run on Mysql?

I am clueless about SQL. Can anyone answer this question or give me some guidance?

On my Win2k Server I have both(means all the three) SQLServer7/2k and MySQL/MyODBC. John Fill

I'm not exactly clear what you mean. SQL Server 2000 will run on Windows 2000 Server and NT 4.0 Server*. If the web server is running one of theose operating systems SQL 2000 will run.

MySQL is a database engine. SQL Server 2000 is a dataabse engine. John indicates it is possible to run both on the same machine - if I understand his reply correctly. However, it doesn't make sense to ask if SQL 2000 can run on MySQL. That's like asking if Wordperfect can run on MS Word.

If the question is, "Can I load SQL 2000 database files into MySQL?" The answer is, "No, but you can export from SQL 2000 and import into MySQL. You can probably transfer directly from SQL 2000 to MySQL using MyODBC."

* The personal Edition and desktup edition also run on Win98, Win ME, and Win NT 4.0 Workstation. Terry L. Broadbent
