I am using a Merant sql92 driver to produce queries on progress, I am having to enclose my select statements in " " ie select "table name"."column name" - is this correct?

Same problem and yes, that is the solution as recommended by Progress. If you go one step further and use VB to generate and pass your SQL through to Progress then you will have to use char 34 instead of quotation marks.
