SQL publication distr task failure

trying to get the distribution task to work, however it keeps failing. I tried to uninstall/reinstall SQL a few times, but no luck. Tried uninstall/reinstall of Publishing but no go. Changed the version of SQL to SQL 6.50.415 but no luck. Copied the db*.dlls from winnt\system32 to the mssql\binn folder but still no luck. Any and all suggestions are welcome. The error message in the task history reads; "IM001[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager]Driver does not support this function"
