does anyone know how long they keep for and where the properties are set for that, i can't see to get an answer and if i looked at the archived logs and compare sizes and dates, tehere doesn't seem to be a pattern

Everytime you stop and start the SQL Server services, it closes out the current log and starts a new one. That can cause the logs to have different sizes. The stored procedure, sp_cycle_errorlog, also can be used to stop the current log and open a new one.

Refer to the BOL, use the index tab and enter Error Log for more information.
