SQL doesn't seem to work after patch

I downloaded the access tutorial which requires the desktop sql server. It used to work fine. IT applied the latest patch to it and now when I bring up the northwind example it says disconnected in Parenthesis. If I tried to upgrade an access db it seems to search forever.
Any Ideas.
