spoolsv.exe

As soon as windows starts spoolsv.exe gradually uses more and more of my memory until eventually the op sys stalls and I have to reboot. I assume that something is being spooled but never gets past spoolsv.exe. It’s a Windows 2000 Pro PC on a Novell network, using HP Jet Direct printer server and a HP Laserjet4050. Any help would be great!!

This seems to be a common problem a lot with novell clients. I found it was usualy caused by disabling the printer port on the motherboard (LPT1) in the BIOS while using a novell network with or without a network printer. (The reason I say "with or without" is because regardless of wether you have a network printer novell drivers still load network printer drivers.) It is a "bug" in windows that doesnt accept the novell network printer as the printer port. It was done by M$ because they are trying to stop people using novell. The solution I found is either reenable the M. Board printer port. (That had a low sucess rate) Or rename spoolsv.exe to something else. (That had a 100% sucess rate) Once spool.exe is taken out of the picture you will find another file will take up cpu time as well. I have forgotten exactly what the file is (I think dpm something .exe) but you will find it taking up cpu usage after spoolsv.exe is disabled. Rename that file to something else as well. I have found it does not affect your network printing or any windows functions. And I have done extensive tests. I dont know but it might stop you from printing to a printer localy but novell network printers will work fine still. I have found this problem with windows 98 SE windows 2000 and windows XP and the same solution works for them all.
Try also stopping the spoolsv (printer spool service), the memory gets released. I then restart the service manually and things seem to be alright. I'm still looking for a permanent solution to this.
Ensure you r running Novell client 4.83. I have heard that this solves a lot of HP issues Warmest regards, Chris

How do I rename the spoolsv.exe file? Do I have to do this in the registry? When I rename the spoolsv file it does not save.
Also I need to print to a local printer.This resolution states that the printer may not work.

I'm having the same problem with Windows 2000 and found the above answer somewhere else. Seems like Windows re-creates files that are important to it...including this..

Create a VB program with one line in it:

END

Compile it as SPOOLSV.EXE

WIndows will find it, won't recreate it, run it, and you're home free.

I have seen posts elsewhere stating that the Novell Client 4.83 resolves the problem with spoolsv.exe.

We used to have that problem, also, but it turned out to be an Nvidia problem - certain versions of Detonator drivers conflicted with some Novell clients and the spooler would endlessly eat up more and more memory until either the Detonator drivers were updated or the Novell Client was updated.
