Spoolsv.exe slowing system down WinXP

Okay, first of all, I realize that there are other threads dealing with spoolsv.exe utilizing far too high percentage of the CPU, but my problem is different.

I am running WinXP on a pretty fast machine and have a DeskJet 712c connected. I am sharing this printer via Windows File and Print Sharing. The problem is this: I have noticed at times that when running high-CPU-utilizing programs I have periods where the program will lag, sometimes causing the cursor to "jump" across the screen when the mouse is moved. This is not normal behavior as I have an Athlon 2000+ w/1 GB PC2100. I went into Task Manager and nothing was running at more than 0% other than the program that is lagging. I finally found out through trial and error that it was spoolsv.exe causing the problem, even though Task Manager shows it utilizing 0% CPU and having less than a 4 MB footprint in memory. But, when I terminate the process, my lagging program stops lagging and runs fine. (Just in case anyone is wondering, the program in question is BF1942.) After I stop the process, everything is fine for a while and then the spoolsv.exe starts up again and everything in the game slows way down again. This happens on local AND networked games, both LAN and Internet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, this happens not only on BF1942 but on a number of other games/applications, the more intensive the program the more severe the interference by spoolsv.exe.

I am running WinXP Pro 2002.

Thanks in advance!
Matthew

I would suggest checking and making sure your printer port is set to ECP/EPP 1.9 or just straight ECP in the BIOS.

If you are set to basic bi-directional I have seen this type of problem occur. By setting the LPT port up to something better/faster to see if that helps it run smoother.

Good luck!

Thanks, I tried the setting in BIOS to BOTH ECP and EPP 1.9, and it didn't seem to make a difference. Should I try the other settings (just EPP 1.9 by itself, just ECP, etc.) or would I just be wasting time? My experience in printers lies in networked printing, not local devices... Thanks in advance!
