Whenever we stop the spooler service, we get the following error message titled "spoolss.exe - Application Error":

The instruction at "0x50402e70" referenced memory at "0x0000004c". The memory could not be "written".
Click on OK to terminate the application

After clicking OK, the service stops. We are then able to restart the service without error.

Here's some additional information that may help figure out what's causing this as well as the fix:

- Dell PowerEdge 2300 running NT 4.0 server with SP6a
- HP JetAdmin version 3.4
- Have been working with Dell Technical Support and they've ruled out hardware as the cause.
- Have searched Microsoft's knowledge base extensively and came up empty

Any ideas?

A while back I was having issues with this "spoolss.exe" crapping out. First thing was to ensure no one's PCs were set to "Spool Print job" - have them print directly to printer [[cause it's being spooled anyway on the server. . . don't wanna spool it twice]]. Also, I then installed the JetAdmin to each workstation. It also installs the JetDirect printer port (or something like that.) Either way, after the install, from the user's PC - add new printer and use that new JetDirect driver. It cleared up our spoolss.exe problems. May do the same for your problems. Good Luck.

I eliminated about 80% of my networks' printing problems by moving to TCP printing - so much more reliable than any utility I've ever used.
