Hi All!

Can anyone tell me why I sometimes get a spool32 error which crashes my machine when i print?

The message is:
"this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down."

it does NOT happen every time but is frustrating because i have to reboot.

what are you printing when it happens? large files to print will cause spooler errors especially if it goes larger then the spool cache

doesnt matter - can be excel, notepad, whatever

check your printer options out and see what is happening also in bios set the port to epp-ecp and also check to see if there is a free dma for it that usually kills spool32 errors

I used to get that message on a 95 computer. I found an update on the internet for the file and that fixed the problem. The file was called sp32updt.exe

A number of users have recently had the same problem. Over a period of time, print drivers had been installed, uninstalled, reinstalled, removed... (ad nausium). Windows 9x stores many of the printer port settings in the SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI files. Deleting or unistalling printers many times won't clean up the Windows startup files nor the registry. To solve the problem (most of the time), first uninstall all printers, then restart the workstation. Next, edit SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI and manually remove ALL references to printer ports (physical and logical). Restart the machine and reinstall only the printer(s) that are really used. I still have one user that hasn't been cured. Suspect the registry may have to me cleaned manually to clear the problem. Good Luck!
