Splitting a back end database to improve performance??

We have some databases that are split into front and back ends on a network. The back end is becoming quite large and is slowing down. I'm wondering if splitting the back end into 2 or 3 back ends would improve performance. Does anyone have any success and/or horror stories about trying this?? Thanks Mike Rohde
