I am working in Access 2000 and have a db application on my desktop machine which has been distributed to one other user for his sole use. I know there is still a lot of work to do tidying and speeding up so I want to be able to develop the next version while he uses the present version.
I understand that I will be able to send him a new front end to overwrite his old one retaining his present data in the back end.

I have tried the database splitter which gives me an out of subscript error.

I have split the database manually according to Microsoft's instruction and it all seems to work OK. All the links are there in the BE and the relationships look normal however when I try to do modifications to a query there is trouble.
The query will not open in design mode.
The query will not open
The program semi-lock up and eventually as I press anything in desperation it crashes.

Is it possible that I should not do any further mods on the front end if the database is split or is it something more sinister?

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Access to no avail.

If you go to Tools-->Options-->Advanced Tab, is the default open mode set to shared. Also do you have read, write, delete permissions on the folder where the database resides?

default open mode is set to shared
I have no read write or delete permissions set on the folder

Dongle,

Do you have permissions to the folder that the back-end is located in? This would cause your queries to do weird things because you're trying to pull information from a file that you don't have access to.

I have not set any access permissions for any parts of the database.

I'm developing on a split database, it works fine. I even have the access back end running under VMWare emulating the clients server paths, so I can work on a single portable or PC and simply send them the database, and front or backend work fine on their network.

The symptoms you mention MAY indicate a corruption in the database (usually front end), as I do find Access is prone to corruption during development. It may be worth looking at the effects of repairing the database(s)

I also think that AccessHawaii meant permissions set via the operating system on the folder where the database resides rather than permissions within the Access database.

I have tried repairing etc but to no avail.

I am not sure what you mean by permissions set via the operating system on the folder where the database resides.
As far as I know it is a straight forard folder.

I have a cleaner version of Windows XP intsalled on a different partition so I am going to install Access on this and then try with Northwind and then my datbase to see what happens.

Yes, jjob exactly. It isn't going to matter if you have all the permissions set correctly in the database if you don't have permissions to the directory that it's in.

dongle, You should check with your network guy to make sure that you have all the necessary permissions for the directory that your back-end is located in.

OK thanks for this - will feedback later - other priorities have taken over meanwhile.

I tried them all without success. In the end I came to the conclusion that there was a problem with my operating system or with my Access installation. I tried removing and reinstalling Access without success. In the end I installed a second clean Windows XP on another partition and split the database on that. The nwely split database now works successfully on both opertaing systems.
