Hi, I see a lot of advice on Outlook Express but I don't know if this the same for Outlook 2000 running on an XP Pro platform.

A user gets the message "An error occurred whilst spell checking" (or something very similar and vague) but no other information. (He HAS got spelling set up correctly under Tools - Options - Spelling in Outlook.)

I have followed the instructions on Microsoft's support website (article 241485) and reinstalled proofing tools/set to run from my computer but it still doesn't work.

Has anyone got any ideas? Perhaps a registry problem..?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Kippy thanks for responding.

I guess the short answer is no I didn't try them all, only one of them. I did make the checks in Outlook as per link 2.

However link 1 and 3....would they be relevant? We run Outlook 2000 and these are for Outlook 97 & 2002 respectively.

I only searched Microsoft for problems with Outlook 2000.

Your correct they probably wouldnt be that relevant.
Can you either run a repair of office or reinstall it?
The spell check function is related to the word spell check.....

This is most likely linked to my original query - but I have noticed that within Word 2000 on this user's machine (on an XP Pro platform...) the custom dictionary is not available if we want to add words.

I have tried epxorting the whole proofing tools registry key from a working XP machine and registering this, but it still fails.

One other thing I have already tried is changing the value data of custom dictionary in registry to:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft\Shared\Proof\custom.dic
(as recommended on a Microsoft site) but still didn't work.

If anyone has any other advice I would really appreciate it!
Thanks in advance.

I did try repairing/reinstalling the Outlook & Office applications but it didn't help.

In the end this problem was resolved by recreating the users domain profile which then forces us to go through the Outlook 2000 set up wizard again. Worked first time.
