Speeding Up Reports in 8i

Hi there,
I'm working on a cheque processing system, that contains the usual mixture of on line forms reports and batch jobs. One complaint that we get from the users is about the length of time that it takes to "run" any Oracle report. The users say that the Reports Background Engine takes a long time to fire up.

Has any one encountered this kind of thing before and does anyone have any ideas how to make Report Generation quicker, we are using 8.1.7.4 on Sun Unix boxes if this matters.
