I have done a defrag and stopped in the process (just with the stop button, nothing wild :)). After that I rebooted and had windows tell me that it needed to check the files. Left it on two days while windows was displaying the message "Insufficient disk space to hotfix unreadable file {number of file}" over and over again. Then finally just rebooted, skipped the checking thing and got back in windows finding out that all my data was still there (very relieved). Only thing is that some of my files are unreadable/corrupted. When trying to do something with the file I get the message "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.". I now just would like to delete the files or replace them with files from backups, but windows won't let me do anything with the file (no recovery is needed here I believe). So basically I got the same problem as thread602-1221481. The author of the thread closed off by telling he just did "Properties->Tools->Error-Checking". The problem is, I can't find this tool. I'm on winXP.

Thanks

You can open up 'My Computer' and right-click on your drive (probably Local Disk (C:)) and select Properties. Click the Tools tab and click 'Check Now' under Error-checking. Check off both options and click Start. It will probably ask if you want to schedule the check at the next restart. Answer yes and restart the computer. Then go watch some TV for a little while as this will take a little bit of time to complete.

Another method to do this would be to open a command prompt and type chkdsk /r.
