Sparc 5 SCSI issue with second drive and external scsii drive

I have a Sparc 5 system with a tape drive connected to the external scsi port. When I installed a second internal harddrive (top slot), I could not get the drive to work correctly unless the tape drive was disconnected. The scsi ID's are different. (I think the 2nd hard drive is using 1 and the tape is setup as 4). I have the same issue on 3 other Sparc stations. I have no documentation on the Sparc, the hard drive or the tape drive.

Do any of the SCSI id's share any other resources? Does the second hard drive slot share with the external scsi port?
