I remember reading somewhere that SP4 can backup to Fixed Disks - can anyone provide me w/ a link to a HowTo, or a Help Keyword?

Dave

Telephia,

I don't think there is a document for that..

all you have to do is..
1.run device configuration from the ARcserve program group
Hit "Next"
2.select "File System Devices"
Hit next
3. It will prompt you to stop tape engine if it is running.
hit "yes"
4. File System Device configuration screen will come up.
Hit "Add"
Fs device will get added and highlighted(def: FS Name)
5. Click on FS Nameto change the name
6. click on the Blue Bar under Description and put in one
7. click on the Blue Bar under Location and click on the arrow to point the folder, which you want to be the FS device...

Follow thru the wizard.

Good luck

Hello,

Actually it's not SP4 that allows you to do this, but SP3 and patch number QO11058. Arcserve basically fools its device manager into thinking that the disk device is a tape. It does work though.

ssoulages,

what u say WAS true before sp4 was released..

the patch you are talkin about has been rolled into sp4 .....

so if you apply sp4, you can you FS device..

Thanks, guys.

Any chance it will work w/ remote devices? (NAS, or Windows Shares?)

D

Yes it does...

Note:
ARcserve system account should have complete control over the remote share..

cheers

speshalyst,

You are so right! Thank you for setting me straight.

Scott :-)

speshalyst -
I was able to create the device, and add it to a device group. I connected the share as the Backup Service Account, and confirmed that it is writable.

But, when I look in device manager, it appears as though there is "No media in drive".

Any idea?

D

Can you please let me know how you are doing it...

it works fine for me... So it Shall be Written!

Created a share on a remote box. Assigned BackupService full control on the folder, Everyone has full control on the share.

On my Arcserve box, I logged in as the Backup Service account, and mapped the drive to M:. Confirmed that I could write and delete files to that Drive.

Ran the Device Configuration Wizard. Created a New Device name& Description, then from the selection dialog I selected the M: drive. Finished the Wizard.

Restarted the Tape Engine.

From the Device View, I now have a new adapter called "CA FSAdapter." My new device shows up, but the Right window pane indicates that there is now media in the drive.

If I do the same to a local disk, the Device view indicates a blank disk, but I don't have enough space to make this viable.

D

Create a folder under the M: drive, and point to this folder from the Device configuraiton wizard..

Still not working - same error "No media in device."

D

This is the last shot....

add the BackupService to the local "administrators" group on the remote machine where you have the share created...

Speshalyst,
i haven't been able to get this to work either. Could you give detailed instructions on how you did it? Perhaps even email some screenshots?

3. run device configuration and add it to FS device.
