Is it necessary to apply SP3 to machines when you only install the MS SQL client libs?

Depends on what your goals are. i usually do it so i have it up to date and not worry about bugs. but i suppose its not necessary.

Go to Microsoft's page support.microsoft.com and look up SP3. There should be a document listing what fixes it has in it. Verify these fixes BEFORE you decide not to apply it. There could be some client-side security issues that the service pack takes care of.
