We are slowly introducing Windows XP SP2 throughout the office. My dev workstation is unfortunately a Dell 8300, installed SP2 over a clean and shiney new installation of WXP SP1 - Does not work.

System locks up on final reboot. It appears to occur immediately after the agp440.dll installs. None of the 'safe modes' are any better off, and "last known good configuration" does not work either.

After trying once after 'Repairing' the XP installation and after re-installing WXP SP1 over SP2 after that, the system routinely closes Windows Explorer and other programs due to errors.

Dell confirms this is an issue and would not comment on the degree to which thier computers are effected.

I'm only reporting what I know so that others may be aware, I didn't participate in the RC stage - I didn't want to be M$'s free guinea pig so I don't know if this was a developement with the 'final' issue. We have a 4600 working fine and all of my ASUS based systems accept SP2 just fine.

From the Aumha forum:

There are other reported BIOS issues with Xp2. Among others, Dell D600 laptops with BIOSs earlier than A12. Hard drive corruption my result according to Dell. I have a different model, but my BIOS is A08 from Dec 2002. This may be a case of better safe than sorry.
