Basically the question comes down to this - if I do not want to put SP2 onto a computer yet, & if the WinXP machine doesn't already have SP1 installed, do I get all the changes made with SP1 through windowsupdate.com? Because I'm not seeing a listing anywhere for SP1 on the site. Or do I need to get a hold of an SP1 cd & install from that?

You have to search in the Download center for XP SP1. Here's what you're looking for:

Maybe some of your friends or workmates will have a copy of SP1 or SP1a on CD that they can lend you. About this time last year Microsoft released a free Security CD with all updates up to about Nov. 2003, that will most likely have SP1 or 1a on it.

Some pre-Service Pack 1 (SP1) hotfixes do not migrate to the SP1 version when you update your computer to Windows XP SP1

Are there any problems why you don't wish to install SP2, most of the problems encountered should be well documented by now?

It's not compatibility reasons I'm concerned about, it's all the new annoyances Microsoft put into SP2. There are always a few people out there who get upset over everything, or there's other people whom I'm just starting to do business with, and I just don't want to be the one to tell them "yes, I just made running files & navigating the internet super annoying to use."

Eventually I'll get SP2 on all computers, I just want to first really go through & learn how all the new features work & also how to turn them off (especially how IE handles pop-ups, activex installs, and file downloads). But for now SP2 is not a priority for me, I've got a lot of other work that needs to be done first.

Stick this away for later on.
