Ok, so I got on my computer this morning only to see that it's been restarting all night. It'll try to load windows, then reboot and go to the screen where you select a startup method (normal or safe mode). I can't boot into normal mode, and I can't system restore to earlier.

This is what the Event Viewer shows as happening at 3am, right before it restarted itself. Somehow these updates were automatically installed, although they should have only been automatically downloaded. I'm assuming these somehow caused the problem I'm having now.

Code:
Restart Required: To complete the installation of the following updates, the computer will be restarted within 5 minutes:
- Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB890859)
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB893086)
- Critical Update for Office XP on Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB885884)
- Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB890923)
- Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - April 2005 (KB890830)
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB893066)

Something else worth mentioning are two errors I got:

Code:
Source: Obvious, Event ID: 1

The description for Event ID ( 1 ) in Source ( obvious ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: , No Start, SafeMode.

Code:
Source: Obvious, Event ID: 4

Driver detected an internal error in its data structures for .

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I've searched on info for the "obvious" driver and can't find anything.

Thanks,
Rick

From the Safe Mode Options Screen you could try the "Last known good configuration" option to see if that fixes it.

If you are at SP2 you should also have the option from the Safe Mode Options Screen to turn off any automatic restart and display the actual error as a BSOD. Posting the exact error message would be helpful in tracking down the problem.

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console for Windows XP (Q307654)

Try running ChkDsk /r from the Recovery Console to check your drive for errors.

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

This is a layman's version of Q307545 in simple language.
