I have been completely without sound for 3 months now. I have tried new speakers, checked the connection, been through system device, properties, etc. No mute all buttons are on, the only thing I came across is "PnP Audio System not installed. Also a message "Driver enabled but inactive due to unknown problem. Alot of .vxd not installed, example: cwbaudix.vxd - file not installed, vwstream.vxd - file not installed, C:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd (ntkem.vxd), Crystal PmP audio system M{U 101 com, cwbmidi.vxd vwstream.vxd, all these state that they are not installed. Please help, as I have become so obsessed with fixing this I havn't read mail in weeks - ready to put computer outdoors! [sig][/sig]

With all the drivers uninstalled sound can't work. Time to remove all sound stuff and let it reinstall.
Normally would expect OS to load the card driver then the rest would look during their installation for that driver. So the first step getting corrupted would cause the later ones to fail.
It is not unreasonable to expect to have to reinstall the OS too. But that is down the road a while, after all other solutions are tried.

go to and click on beginners search on the left hand side. under the alphabet click C for crystal semiconductors then download the relevant driver ( cs4236b perhaps?). what type of PC do you have ? then as above remove all sound properties from under device manager, including any unknown device.
on rebooting you will be asked for the drivers which you should now have downloaded
