Sound Problem

All sound cuts out on a friends pc after about 10 minutes use. If the pc is restarted, the sound will work again for a few minutes and then go. Have tried reinstalling drivers but no good. The sound chip is integrated on the motherboard. Should I consider buying a cheap sound card to solve the problem?

First check the thermals on the audio chip. The MB's documentation should show its location. Open the case door and aim a room fan at the chip. Does the problem go away? If so there's your culprit. It also may have a heatsink that needs to be re-seated.

If it's a software error it should show up in Event Viewer (right-click My Computer->Manage->Event Viewer)

If heat is the problem, Antec makes an ingenious Spot Cool flexible fan, I used it to cool a toasty Northbridge chip w/o modding the board and voiding my warranty.

Have you perhaps installed the recent Microsoft .ANI patch? It seems to interfere with systems that have the Realtek HD Audio control panel installed:
