Have a client who upgraded their pc. They "ghosted" the hard drive and now the sound doesn't work.I tried removing the on board sound card and installing a nother one. Still no sound.
Any ideas?
Dave

Did any of the speaker connections get un-plugged during the work? When you go to Media Player and play a midi, does the bar slide across the bottom to show how much of the file is playing or do you get an error? I've had a few clients plug the speaker line-out to the modem audio in instead of the sound card audio-out.

Nothing unplugged. When I go to sounds in the control panel, I can high light as sount to play but the play button is grayed out.
Win 98SE OS

What does Device Manager show for a sound card? What does it list for audio in Control panel/Media?

CMI8738 PCI audiodevice.
In the multimedia icon, the playback and recording icons are grayed out.

Please read all the suggetions in this earlier thread: thread779-924262

bcastner,
I read them all, tried many thing that were listed and still have the same problem.I am getting error 0xC0011BA.
I chech out their suggestion to no avail.

OK I fixed it.
Started the system in safe mode, went to "control panel" system, device manager, sound controller and remove all drivers. Restarted the system and reinstalled correct drivers. Sound now works great.
Thanks to all who aided in my problem

Without Sound - I think I have a similar probloem as seen in another thread. I built a new computer but wanted to use my old sound card. I thought I loaded it and updated the correct drivers. I have no sound period thoughin the media player it scrolls through as if it were playing.

First, is there on-board sound, if is it disabled in yhe bios?
Does the sound card show up in the hardware devices?

thanks for responding. There is on board sound so I thought of the BIOS issue and am unsure where in the BIOS set up to disable it. Yes, the sound card shows up in hardware devices - and shows it is operating properly. Something kinda weird -if I plug my headphones into the speaker out on the sound card I get sound....

Sounds like your speakers are bad, power not plugged in to speakers, or speaker power switch turned off. Did you plug your speakers into the speaker out jack?

Jim

Well, the speakers were working fine before I built this computer. I am not getting sound to my headphones at all through the headphone jack on the front of the machine either.

You said, "-if I plug my headphones into the speaker out on the sound card I get sound...."
So, if you plug the speakers into the same place, you should have sound through your speakers.

Jim

Make and model of the motherboard. Also, try plugging headphones in to the output of the sound card.
Also, try opening control [panel, sounds/audio devices, sounds/ and cilck on any sound and see if it plays

Are the speakers "powered" (is there a seperate power supply that plugs into the wall)? Some old computers used "unpowered" speakers - the sound card had the amplified output, now you need amplified speakers.

Hi, I'm having this problem with sound on my pc, it's recently been upgraded to XP from 2000 and the sound has disappeared completely ... I've tried several different things but none have worked. In media player the scroll bar moves as though it recognises the on board sound card but nothing comes out of th espeakers...I've tried the headphones trick too but that's not worked either ... has anyone any ideas please ?
