in dxdiag sound tests "microsoft synthesizer" plays the sound all broken / jumping, yet says it's working fine.

also if dxdiag tries to load directshow it crashes win98se

the problems occure in various software, games /apps etc.. depending on usage.

are the problems related? any suggestions?

1. Has this always happened? If not, when did it start?
2. Have you looked at updating or reinstalling your sound/video drivers?

Matt J.

P.S. Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

1) nope this started happening after a complete reinstal from HD format.

2)I have been updating everything humanly possible.. nothing seems to fix it. :(

perhaps I am missing an audio driver from someplace?? I have been all over the net trying to find anything I think might help.

Any flags in device manager?

I recently bought a new system with similar specs to avspool's and was having exactly the same problem.

My processor is an AMD Athlon XP 2500+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.833GHz. I have the same RAM as avspool and my card is an NVIDIA GeForce4 MX Integrated GPU. Am using win98se (same version as avspool) and directX 8.1 (4.08.01.0881). No problems were showing up in device manager either. Everything else was fine.

Earlier today, I searched for updated drivers in microsoft windows update under the Nvidia Audio Codec Interface in Device Manager. It asked me if I wanted to download + install direct.b1, which I did. It came back with no updates but when I tried to run directx diags after this it hung for about 5 mins and when it finally ran it was giving me error messages under sound and music.

Under sound notes it says:
DirectSound test results: Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT = 0x88780032 (error code)

Under music notes it says:
DirectMusic test results: Failure at step 6 (Activating the IDirectMusicPort): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)

Any ideas?

Scratch that last bit actually, everything is now back to where it was (as in avspool's post, though I haven't tried loading directshow). This is wrecking my head. It doesn't just affect the sound in some games/apps, it also affects both sound and visuals on DVDs under PowerDVD.

Are you both telling it to use you're preferred device in Control Panel Multimedia Tab?...Make sure Onboard Sound is enabled in BIOS. It sounds as though maybe the IRQ assignment and/or memory allocation is off a bit...
AVspool and Czarner;
Try installing Netmeeting from Communications in Windows Setup Tab--> Control Panel Add/Remove..(just thinking maybe the Active Movie components were not installed).
czarner; directx.b sounds Beta version (not fully tested)

Very possible the reformat and install didn't load all the components as well...Check Multimedia Tab in Windows Setup tab too..

I managed to fix it, by reinstalling the lastest nvida sound drivers and then adding the windows "hotfix" which seems to be needed everytime windows is reinstalled.

Hey avspool, which hotfix is that and whats the link? I have got around the problem for the moment by turning hardware accelaration down to basic in the sound tab of dxdiag + the performance tab of advanced properties of audio playback in Multimedia control panel. This shouldn't be necessary in my machine I'm sure tho and you seem to have a more permanent solution there. Also, avi's have to be saved onto my hard drive to play even tho I've 52x CD drive! Cheers!

The hotfix I used was Q269601.EXE this one I think would only apply to my nvidia system specs (although might work for you as well) I have no link, but I think it can be found on microsoft.com (I have it on cd)

Good luck :)

Cheers avspool, it took a bit of tracking down but I got the fix and it seems to have cleared up the problem! For anyone who wants this hotfix, go to

and follow the link to downloads, and then to drivers and updates and then click on and download Windows 98SE USB Hotfix, and thats your baby!
