After reinstall of Windows 98SE -dual boot with XP SP2- on 98 SE no sound.
In Device Manager there are two yellow question marks-
?"Other devices"
? PC Multimedia Audio Device
Seems sound card drivers are not instaled or sound card isn't detected.
Try to run driver install but not succeed.Just instead PC Multimedia Audio Device now as second yellow question mark is displayed "Unsupported device"
then:
-Manufacturer: Not specified
-Drivers for this device are not installed ( code 28 )
To reinstall click Reinstal Drivers-- after that receiving:
"Unsupported Device"
No any kind of sound, probably because the sound card is not detected.
Please note that on XP sound is O.K.
Any advice how to fix this please.

Did the sound card come with a driver CD, and if so, did you try to install the drivers from there?

Or did you d/l the drivers from the sound card manuf's site, and try to install these?

This is pretty normal for initial installation of lots of sound devices, particularly embedded ones. General solution is to hilite the audio device in the mangler, click properties, driver tab, and change the driver to whatever driver you have. But you will want to make sure you just have one instance before you do it.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

or you could inspect visually your sound card's brand and model no. and google that. hopefully, you will have results that will lead you to the driver downloads that will later be used for installation.

hope this helps. peace! [peace]

Found that vendor is VIA Technologies Inc and device is VT82C686B AC'97 Audio Codec.Yesterday try to install drivers d/l from Drivers Guide Toolkit site, but without succees.
Today from PC vendor received CD to istall drivers.Firs chio set then AC'97 Audio Codec.
Now I have so called " System sounds" and on task bar is placed icon for sound level.
When try to play Windows Media Player , after "play" nothing- program is hanging-
In Control Panel >Multimedia>Audio>any available device -found only one that opens Properties sahowing settings for balance-mute and so on.
What I can do to activate Windows Media player ?

One thing more...In Device manager under "Sound....I have only three devices:
-VIA Game Port Joystick
-VIA PCI Audio Controler and
-Wave Device for Voice Modem
Don't know if should have more then this mentioned.
Repeat hopping that installation will run automatcally from suplied CD but seems that should be done manualy.
Any advice ,please.
