I have an older HP Vectra VL Pentium II with an AWE sound card. I can not get the little speaker icon to appear in the tray and I hear no sound. When I tell the mixer to install this icon in the tray, it says that the Volume Controls have not been installed. I have installed the latest AWE drivers but no change.

Can someone help?

kiernanf,
Go to control panel/settings\add remove programs and then click the Windows setup tab. Then scroll down the list to Multimedia, and then click the Details button. Make sure that the Sound recorder AND the Volume Control boxes are checked. Then Click OK> Then click on Apply. You may or may not be promted to restart. After restarting, your little yellow speaker SHOULD be in your system tray.

Cheers
