Sorting and Groups

Using Crystal Reports 8.5 I wish to be able to sort a group in Ascending Alphabetical Order. The group I am using is a Product ID field containing numbers. However I want to display the product names that relate to the product id's, so I then used the grouping options and selected the Product Name field (so far so good). However Crystal Reports still wants to sort the group by Product ID and I want it to sort by the displayed name on the report. This report is a drill-down report. Am I missing something?

Delete the product ID group, leaving a product name group.

As products can have different descriptions and there's nothing to stop them from having the same description or product name (but they would have separate product numbers) Grouping by Product ID is more preferrable but I still need to be able to sort the group by product name even though it searches for different products by it's product ID.

If you group by product name first, then group by product id second, suppress the product name group it should all work out correct.

Try it and let me know how you get on.......

If you already have the ID group, and then create the product name group, you can go to the change group expert and use the arrow key to make product name the higher order group--thus determining the sort order--without having to delete a group to do it.

Another alternative would be to concatenate the product name with the product Id and group on that. You can then decide whether to display the ID in the group or just the name or both.
