Sony Vaio DVD+-RW/CD-RW missing from windows 1

Hello, I recently bought a sony vaio and it worked perfectly until yesterday. All of a sudden the dvd/cd drive dissapeared and I can't get it to work again. Any ideas?
If anybody knows about the VAIO BIOS, I checked it out and on the second channel there was nothing detected while on the first was the hard disk. Might this be a hardware failure?
