I'm an absolute newbie to Cisco so please be gentle. I've been given a Cisco 857w for home working. I use a notebook with a Belkin 54mbps 802.11g PCMIA card that works fine – my problem is getting my daughters Sony PSP connected. The procedure with the PSP is that you select infrastructure mode (rather than ad-hoc). You give it a name (so you can have several connections set up on the PSP). It can then scans for a connection. It finds one with a blank SSID and identifies it as WEP encryption. You then enter the SSID manually followed by the encryption key. Then the “address settings” for IP, gateway and DNS address can either be set to automatic or entered manually (I’ve taken automatic). Once settings are saved you do a test – this is the problem the PSP reports that the test fails and to check the security settings. These are OK so I’m stuck. The SSID contains upper/lower case letters and spaces. The WEP key also contains upper/lower case letters and characters such as % and £. Part of the router config, that I think pertains, is (“Removed” = detail removed) :-

!
interface Dot11Radio0
no ip address

encryption key 1 size 128bit Removed transmit-key
encryption mode wep mandatory

As you can guess my boss does not see this as a priority but he is helping me. Has anyone got a PSP working with a Cisco wifi and can help me out?

is the wep key encrypted in the router?
are you putting in the unencrypted version of the wep key to your psp?

The PSP allows 4 formats of WEP key: -

? 5 letters and numbers (ASCII)
? 13 letters and numbers (ASCII)
? 10-digit hexadecimal (0-9 and a-f)
? 26-digit hexadecimal (0-9 and a-f)

Mine is 13 letters and numbers so it’s encrypted 128 bit.

P.S. Yesterday tried specifying an IP address instead of “no IP address” – no change. Previously we tried temporally disabling encryption altogether with no change. Also tried specifying channel 11 with no change. I think the usual “Alter one item at a time/reverse if no change” isn’t going to work this time. Has anyone already got a working configuration ?

ok, so as you say
"The WEP key also contains upper/lower case letters and characters such as % and £"

since the wep key cannot contain % and £ normally im assuming that your router has encrypted the key.

so are you inputting the key into your psp exactly how it looks in the router? or are you using the unencrypted form of the key?

i think the problem is your not authenticating to the accesspoint.. so you will never get an ip until the wireless has connected.

Yes I'm entering the key exactly as it appears in the router (and as I put it in a notebook that works). We even tried entering the hex version in the PSP - no change.

Tonight I plan to retrieve the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS server from the working notebook (using IPCONFIG /all) and entering them into PSP manually rather than using "Automatic" (changing the IP slightly of course). I'll report back tomorrow.

You need to find out what the WEP key looked like when you entered it into the router config as it will be encrypted when you view it doing a show run. There should be a number before the key - either 5 or 7, this is the encryption level. I don't know how to de-crypt type 5 but 7's are easy:

I'm sure I have both the SSID & WEP key correct (they worked in the notebook and I've re-done them several times). Only way they could be wrong would be if the PSP has a intrinsic fault and displays the wrong characters !!!.

Well I tried entering the IP,subnet etc manually - still no change :-<

Next I plan a mass change to the router

1 - simple one word SSID
2 - no encryption
3 - broadcast the SSID
4 - enable long preamble(or is it disable short?)
5 - leave IP set

Can any one think of anyother change I should make ?

Debug on the router would be my next port of call.....

Tried the changes (also used channel 11) result... ZILCH. Tried debug - nothing at all !!!! - it's not even seeing the PSP. Had previously tried a "firmware" update to the latest - that was even worse in that the PSP no longer found it when scaning. So reluctantly I give up - the PSP doesn't work with this Cisco router. Searching the web I find a few routers don't and this is one of them.

Thank you to all who have tried to help me.

My nephew is coming to my house in a couple of weeks and he has a PSP - I will make sure he brings it and I will attempt to get it working with my Cisco AP1100.

I am pretty certain this will work but you haven't found the correct settings. Giving up and buying a new router is just admitting defeat.....

I'll post my findings here when I do.

Andy

scotty did you manage to solve this?

im havin problems getting the wan connection set up to the web.

im on tiscali can you assist?

No I did not sort it with the Cisco - I did try with a Netgear DG834G and got that set up in minutes to both the notebook and the PSP (though I couldn't use WEP with the PSP - the internet says a firmware upgrade would sort that).

I'm waiting for Andy (ADB100) trying his nephew's PSP but I bet he has no problem with the AP1100. It's a seperate WAP I think.

What router have you got and is the connection problem with a PSP ?

i have a 857w - i cannot seem to get it working so i have web access. The wan set up etc.

read the various forums and tried a few things but still not good. what isp provider are you with? im with tiscali.

When my nephew turned up he had been playing on the PSP all day and there was no charge left in it. I asked him where the charger was and he said he hadn't brought it..... 12-year olds eh?

If I can get hold of another I will try and set this up but at the moment I have no access to a PSP, sorry.

Andy

Andy.

i want to test my psp out but i cannot as yet as i cannot get my 857w on the web. have you managed to set your connection up so you can get web access from your 857??

Cheers Andy - I don't blame your nephew - PSP's are so addictive (I've just got homebrew games working under v2.0).

Sam - our Cisco is supplied to us, via our consultant, preconfigured so I can't help on that score though I would like to understand your problem. Is it just the wireless side you can't get working or is it not working fullstop ?. If its not connecting at all then maybe a seperate post would be more appropiate. If it's the wireless side, what are you tring to connect with ?.

One simple thing to check is that your ADSL filter is OK. Also your ISP signon/password.

P.S. Setting up the Netgear was a breeze - I'm not anti Cisco honest !!!! :->

andy /scott thanks

you got home brew on firmware 2.0?? cool..i have got my psp with 1.5 playing homebrew and others etc.

yeah i am having issues with the kit in total. i know many have got there 857w working so they get internet. once i get this solved i can try and get the psp working!! But to tell you the truth it might be easier picking up a £50 wireless adsl router and selling the cisco one on!!!

is it possible for you to send me your config ? so i can match it with mine?

p.s if you can be helpful...please delete your username / password off the config text file if you do send.

I do have a "doctored" config but it's 12k in size ie several pages long. I'll email it to you if you think it will help. send me an address.
