sony cd burner problems

Hey all-
I'm running a ABit KT7A Raid board with 512mb ram and 80gig HD under Win2K...the burner is a Sony CD-RW CRX140E.I'm having some major cd burning issues. I can't get the thing to burn anything other than a slow and pitiful 2x...I was running it at 6x and 4x...then suddenly i'm getting 2x or failures all the time. I thought it was my VirusScan, but i totally disabled it, turned off everything else and am still getting no results. I reinstalled Nero5518 and even got a copy of Easy CD Creator 5 to try that...but nothing. I've read through some of the threads here and the only thing i can think of is that maybe my IDE's have been weird since the beginning. Whenever i try to burn anything my system drags its feet like there are no resource left. I'm not that experienced on messing around inside the box and
don't know how to tell what's primary, slave, secondary or whatever. I know that looking through my Device Manager that under VIA Bus Master IDE Controller my Primary IDE Channel is used for the Sony CD-RW CRX140E and my Secondary IDE Channel is using my Sony DVD-ROM DDU1211. I also can't seem to find any new drivers for these things...does anyone have any links??? If i'm totally out of luck can you at least suggest some faster internal cd burners that are operating successful under my config...hopefully at a reasonable cost.

Are you copying CD-CD, or making an image on the HD first?

Try putting the CD and the DVD on the same IDE bus. This will involve swapping cables and jumpers. Put the HD on it's own bus. Nate Gagne

I've really only been burning files from my HD to the Cd. Some of them have been audio cds. I have tried making an image of everything to burn and then burning the image, but it didn't help.
Why would putting the CD and DVD on the same bus improve speed?...sorry, not being a smarty...i really don't know why and am not quite sure how to do all the above, but maybe i can figure that part out. How do i tell which bus is on where? The only thing i know is that the Primary IDE channel is for the Sony CD burner and the Secondary IDE Channel is for the Dvd player...not sure how to tell which one is where the HD is...any help here would be greatly appreciated.

By having the HD run on the same bus as either the CD or the DVD, you're effectivly slowing the HD speed down to that of the CD (ATA/33).

Oh, that makes sense. I am running Service Pack 2. Do you know of any "how-to's" on switching my cables and jumpers? I'd love to try this. By how i've told you my IDE channels are set up which components are sharing?
Also, can i expect any problems after switching my cables and jumpers? will the device manager understand what has happened or will i need to reinstall some drivers and what not?
Sorry for all the questions...i'm new to all of this, but love getting my hands dirty and learning.

Also Make sure that you run your Burner is UDMA mode instead of PIO.

Usually when you burn on an IDE system and it is not configured properly (cdrom and hd on same channel) the system slowing down is a telltale sign that the modes are mixed up.

Check the drive/IDE port DMA setting. DMA=fast PIO=slow
