I'm brand new to Quark (have used Pagemaker for many years) and am getting very frustrated very quickly. I've received some templates (for CD booklets and tray card), but they are for large printing press sized paper, so I need to make, for example, a booklet template that will print each page on a separate 8.5"x11" paper. Managed to delete enough guides, etc., so that I have a template with one page to print on the paper, but I can't make copies of that page (which is like a 2 page "booklet") so that I can have a 4 or 8 page booklet. Here are my first questions:
1. How can I make the page 1 the master page (with all the guides, etc.), since Quark only seems to be able to insert new pages based on the master page (which is blank).

2. I tried copying the boxes, guides, etc., from the existing page to a new page and could not copy and paste with either <ctrl><C> and <ctrl><V> or Edit/Copy and Edit/Paste (both of which were grayed out). I can't even copy a box or other item to another location on the same page. How do you do this?

I'm using Quark 5.01 on Windows XP. Any suggestions in addition to answers to the above questions would be greatly appreciated. (Yes, I've ordered Quark 5 for Dummies and the Quark "bible", but they won't arrive for a few days.)

Thanks, Bob

For your guide problem make sure when your set your guides they are in the page from and not on the pasteboard frame, then you should see then show up on all your pages for that master page you use. You can select in your "Page Insert" which master page or blank isngle and how many you want to insert of from your documant layout window you can do this.

For your "Copy/Paste" situation, make sure you are selecting the items you what to copy and paste using the "selection tool" thats the one with the 4 arrows, not the "text/grab tool"

Hope this helps!

OK, I'll try your suggestions. But I'd still like to know if there is a way to take a page in a document and make it a master page (even if it means saving to a new document). The document I have has a blank master page, but has all of the guides, boxes, etc., that should be on every page on page 1 (there is only a page 1 at this point). I'd like to use the page 1 in the document as the master page (even if in a new document/template). Maybe this is something that isn't necessary when starting a document from scratch, but it sure would be helpful at this point.

Another question is actually related to a problem in Pagemaker (6.5) and comments I've read about Quark related to problems loading a document, perhaps when the document or Quark (Pagemaker) was not previously closed correctly. Pagemaker will usually recover the "last saved" version, but it's not a confidence builder when you are talking about a document which wasn't changed the previous time you had it open. Does Quark have a similar problem? Are there any suggestions in ways to use Quark to minimize the potential heartburn from losing a document because you can't reopen it?

You will have to create all your guides and boxes on your master page to get it to show up on all of your pages in your document. I haven't encounted a way to copy guides from page to page or from page to a master page, if it is something you are doing all the time you can create your master page then save the document as a template and just open it up as you need.

As for Quark recovering a document that wasn't saved correctly or had na unexpected quit...Quark ot my knowledge dosen't do that, save as you go as I ALWAYS DO!...HAHAHA
