Hi all,

Apologies if this is a very backward question, but Im having major problems in setting up a Small Buiness server 2000 for a small office network.

All I want to do is set up one server and 12 workstaions in a simple Domain like "JSP" for instance.

Firstly when I build the machine, it defaults to a workgroup with no option to be the first server in a domain and then it wants an active directory domain name.

If I use DCpromo and won't make a domain unless I give it a valid internet address.

And Now Im struggling with user setup, I can't use the normal MANAGE option and set up users, I have to use the active directory wizard.

Could anyone please help or point me to a place that could shed some light on this OS.

Cheers

A highly frustrated techie

A good site to look at is: You can also look in groups like this one as most general Win 2K server info will apply to SBS 2k. In Win 2k, you are not given the option to set up a computer as a DC during installation either, and have to run DCPromo. You should be able to set any address as an ip address (in you case probably something in the 10.x.x.x, 172.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x range) that is restricted for private use and not used for internet sites. Also, the reason that you cannot add users using the Manage option is because users are added to the active directory now, not to the Local SAM database, which is what the computer management snap-in attempts to place them in. Running DC Promo (and promoting a server or computer to a domain controller) stops the local SAM from accepting additions. To add users you have to use the 'Active Directory Users and Computers' snap-in. You might want to consider picking up a book on Windows 2000 setup and administration, as it is a complex topic.

Hi Doc Tree,

Sorry for late reply, been decorating and no time for computers. Thanks for the info, I will go and check the site out. Basically I set up Windows 2000 server/advance server at work all the time. It was just that small buisness server threw me because of the domain "thing" and the the user setup. But Ive looking into active directory lately and its begining to make sense.

Many thanks for the reference though.

Cheers
