I'm looking at getting into programming. Would visual basic be a good place to start, or should I go with something like C or C++?

Any advice would be appreciated. ________________________________________

Think of it this way.....VB = MS Only; .NET = MS Only (people will say different about .NET because of mono...but there isn't WinForms in mono yet) C and C++ = anything.....Java = anything.

If you like being controlled by Bill Gates and friends VB is the way to go :p

Lets expand a bit on this... it's not so much a control issue as it is an issue of VIABILITY. A few years ago, VB was just about the hottest thing going. But the reason for that was APPLICATIONS were still running on stand alone computers throught the working world. This new wonder called the internet has opened the doors BIG TIME to "easier" distribution of information, without requiring install packages (to a greater sense, that is)... making deployment less of a head-ache (sort of). [I took a verbose pill today]

When the internet/intranet door opened up, the Stand Alone application door was all but slammed shut. Visit Monster!com and Dice!com and do some research. Count how many jobs are availbe for VB/SQL Server for instance, versus C#, C++, Java and the rest...

Make your decision based on what the market will be like for you, not so much on how you feel about Gates and his wares.

And to each his own! VB RULES! ;)
